The Hidden Cost of Not Having a Proper Analytics Setup
Installing Google Analytics is not the same as having useful measurement. GA4 can collect several events automatically, but businesses still need deliberate configuration to identify the interactions that matter.
Walk into most marketing meetings and you will hear phrases like 'our analytics show...' followed by confident assertions about traffic sources, enquiry rates, and campaign performance. Sometimes that picture is solid. Often it is incomplete: events are missing, key events are unmarked, consent is ignored, or advertising conversions were never linked.
What a default GA4 property actually collects
A standard Google Analytics 4 installation collects automatically collected events such as page_view, session_start, and first_visit. When enhanced measurement is enabled, GA4 can also collect several additional events without custom code, including scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, file downloads, and form start or form submit interactions.
That is useful, and it is not 'almost nothing'. It is also not enough. Enhanced measurement will not reliably identify the specific enquiry, booking, or checkout that matters to the business, especially on JavaScript-rendered forms. Those interactions still need deliberate configuration, validation, and, where they are commercially important, marking as key events.
The question is not whether you have analytics. It is whether your analytics can tell you, with useful confidence, which pages, channels, and campaigns contribute to enquiries and revenue.
Five questions weak measurement still cannot answer
- Which of our marketing channels drove the most qualified enquiries last quarter?
- What is our working cost per lead by channel, including organic search?
- Where in our enquiry form do visitors drop off and abandon?
- Which articles or landing pages generate the most consultation bookings?
- How many phone call clicks came from Google Ads visitors versus organic search?
Key events, not leftover goals
Universal Analytics used goals. In Google Analytics, important business interactions are now key events. Any collected event can be marked as a key event so it surfaces in reporting and channel evaluation. Google Ads still uses conversions in the advertising context. A complete setup usually needs both: key events in Analytics, and advertising conversions where paid media is in play.
Enhanced measurement is a start
File downloads and some form interactions can be collected automatically when enhanced measurement is enabled. Businesses still need to identify the interactions that matter, validate them, mark appropriate events as key events, configure advertising conversions where relevant, and keep consent in front of non-essential tags.
How to tell if the implementation is actually useful
Open the GA4 Events report. If you only see page_view, session_start, and first_visit, enhanced measurement may be off and no business events have been designed. If you see file_download or form_submit, check whether those events represent the real enquiry path, and whether the important ones are marked as key events.
A durable setup usually includes consent-aware tag loading, the events that matter, UTM discipline, and reporting that stakeholders can read. Google Tag Manager is recommended when you need flexible ongoing tag and event management. It is not mandatory for every architecture. Looker Studio is a reporting option, not a prerequisite for a correct GA4 implementation.
